Anthony Hopkins is a doctor who sees Hurt as a study subject before becoming his friend and mentor; with Anne Bancroft, John Gielgud. And, Lynch's avant-garde live performance piece "Industrial Symphony No. 1: The Dream of the Broken Hearted" (1990), staged at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, fuses surreal stagecraft and Angelo Badalamenti's music with the story of a woman who soars on wings of hallucination after her boyfriend ends their relationship. Singer Julee Cruise and (in filmed appearances) Laura Dern and Nicolas Cage star.
