COMPETING STUDIO REPORTS: 'Dark Knight' may top opening day record with $63M and 3-day record with $153M!

FRIDAY 4:00 p.m. (Pacific): Just got off the phone with a competing studio exec, and I am told that their "numbers crunchers" are, at the moment, projecting that The Dark Knight (Warner Bros) will break the all-time opening day and all-time 3-day weekend records, surpassing last May's Spider-Man 3.

According to the studio exec, the Christopher Nolan-directed Batman Begins sequel is on pace for a $63M opening day! That does include the $18.4M reported by Warner Bros this morning for overnight business. If the number holds (or even if it is close), it will a staggeringly huge start for the impeccably-reviewed superhero picture, and it will be enough to blow by Spider-Man 3's $59.84M opening day.

My source also reports that The Dark Knight is on pace for $153M for the 3-day, which would top Spidey 3's opening frame of $151.11M. Keep in mind that when the numers get this big, the percentages get very small. At $153M, Knight would set the record by a margin of less than 1% over SM3. The numbers laid out for me went like this: $63M Friday, $53M Saturday and $37M on Sunday.

DARK KNIGHT slays Spidey with a record $66M opening day, and it will soar past ‘Spider-Man 3’ for $157M and the all-time best opening weekend; ‘Mamma Mia’ also strong; Hollywood's Top 12 could hit $250M for biggest weekend ever!

FRIDAY 9:00 p.m. (Pacific): Christopher Nolan’s long-awaited The Dark Knight (Warner Bros), fueled by thrilling IMAX sequences, a brilliantly conceived script and a diabolically skilled performance by the late Heath Ledger, is on its way to shattering records. Lots of them.

Starting with Thursday night’s 12:01a screenings coast-to-coast, which generated an estimated $18.4M by dawn, and continuing through packed matinee and evening showings, The Dark Knight has delivered a staggering $66M on its opening day.

I published a 3-day estimate of $153M at 4:00 p.m, but I am now projecting that The Dark Knight is on pace for $157M, which will top Spidey 3's opening frame of $151.11M. Keep in mind that when the numbers get this big, the percentages get very small. At $153M, the new Batman would set the record by a margin of less than 4% over SM3. The weekend performance could go something like this: $66M Friday, $54M Saturday and $37M on Sunday.

My hunch is that The Dark Knight will, after all is said and done, be the #1 movie of 2008, chasing down both Iron Man and Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull, both from Paramount. I think this movie will play and play and play.

I also believe that if Academy Awards voters are interested in keeping their show relevant, they would do well to recognize not just Heath Ledger, who deserves to win Best Supporting Actor for what I think is a landmark performance, but also nominate The Dark Knight for Best Picture. All 5 Best Picture nominees should not be small independent films. The Dark Knight is more than just a superhero movie. It is a gritty, twisted, crime drama with an outstanding script, an unsettling theme, spectacular set pieces, and it represents the work of a genius director who pulls it all together with technical virtuosity.

The other major story for Hollywood is that The Dark Knight will successfully lift the film industry to its biggest 3-day weekend in history. I am estimating that when all of the actuals come in on Monday, the top 12 films will have delivered a staggering $250M. That number will crush the previous 3-day best of $209.88 (again the top 12 films) set July 7-9 of 2006. That was opening weekend for Pirates 2 ($135M), the 2nd weekend of Superman Returns ($21.8M) and the 2nd 3-day for The Devil Wears Prada ($15M).

In fact, if the projected number of $250M holds, this weekend will be bigger than the top 12 for any 4-day Memorial Day weekend in history. That is great news for the industry, which seems to be benefiting from a down economy and the number of families who are choosing not to travel. I am already tired of hearing the term “staycation,” but the outrageous price of gas does seem to be keeping people at home and spending their entertainment dollars at the local multiplex.

Mamma Mia (Universal), the ABBA-inspired musical starring Meryl Streep, has done its part in making this a record-breaking weekend for the movie business. The movie opened in the shadow of The Dark Knight, but still danced its way to an estimated $10.5M on Friday, which should translate to $27.5M. This well-reviewed, feel-good chick flick should reach $100M domestic with relative ease.

Eu achei o Batman Begins uma das melhores adaptações de sempre de bd. Mas principalmente por aquele primeiro segmento do filme que mostra a origem do Batman, penso que isso é que o distingue de outros filmes do género. E neste filme, gostava também de ver a origem do Joker, isso não acontecerá e penso que me decepcionará um pouco.

Este filme até pode ser tão bom como se diz, mas por favor, conheço muita gente que não engraçou assim tanto com o Begins e agora parece que só vê este filme à frente. E esse hype, mesmo que merecido, enjoa-me. Porquê? Porque muito deste hype se deve à morte do Ledger. E se já se esperava um grande Joker pelos primeiros trailers e tal, a partir da sua morte, tornou-se um Joker inquestionável e o filme está longe de me parecer um filme do Batman. Por toda a campanha, por todo o marketing e hype à sua volta, não deixo de olhar para este filme como o "filme do Joker" ou "o último filme de Heath Ledger". E uma coisa é certa, uma morte nunca é algo bom, e para mim esta morte do Ledger também me fará ver o filme de modo diferente, tenho que reconhecer que me vou centrar mais na interpretação do Joker e menos na do que devia ser o actor principal. E acho uma injustiça também o que se tem feito ao Christian Bale. Porra, afinal isto é um Batman ou não?? Quem é o actor principal? Afinal, o Christian Bale é algum novato? Claro que não e tenho pena que poucos se centrem na sua actuação e que quando saiu o Begins e após uma fenomenal interpretação ninguém tenha referido uma nomeação de Bale aos óscares, porque certamente que a merecia, dada a dimensão pessoal e humana que deu ao seu Batman. É triste, mas a verdade é que neste mundo tende-se a enaltecer mais as pessoas depois de mortas. Ledger antes de Joker já tinha uma nomeação aos óscares, é verdade. Mas antes desse óscar era visto como um menino bonito de Hollywood, tal como muitos outros. Agora não, ganhou um estatuto de um excelente actor, o que não deixa de ser curioso.

Ando a ir muito pouco ao cinema, mesmo seduzindo muito a possibilidade de ir ver mais um Batman (vi o Begins na 5ª feira de estreia em 2005 cá em PT), acho que vou esperar tranquilamente quando vier para dvd.

Vocês são parvos ou quê? Dizer que o Bale merecia um óscar plo Begins é uma parvoíce extrema. O Joker e o Heath fundiram, e deram a origem a uma representação fora do normal, um show-stealer. Tal como a Angelina Jolie em 'Girl, Interrupted', ninguém olhou para a Winona Ryder, e a Jolie acabou por ganhar o Óscar. São as personagens e a representação do actor que falam mais alto. Dizer que a morte do Heth influencia o filme, isso sim enjoa! A representação FALA MAIS ALTO e não a morte. No 'The Crow', a morte falou mais alto, neste é o Joker.

Quero-vos ver aqui todos a falarem de quão bom foi o iflme depois do dia 24 ;)

Nao ligo minimamente a perfomances no boxoffice americano (apesar de gostar de filmes que eu aprecie tenham algum sucesso pois acabam por "premiar" o cineasta uma vez que os filmes nao crescem nas árvores...) mas eu fico bastante contente com este mega sucesso do Dark Knight. Chegar ao nivel do Spidey e pelos reports vai ultrapassa-lo no fim de semana , no meio do Verao cinematográfico , apos ja terem saido sucessos tao grandes como o Iron Man ou o Indy , acho que é o premiar da WB por apostar no Nolan. Já tinha referido há uns tempos no topico do Iron Man que era bom ver que um filme bastante divertido que nao tratava os espectadores como idiotas acaba por ter a sua recompensa no box office e aqui tiro o chapéu á WB. Após o desastre que foi o Batman Forever , passado algum tempo apostam um realizador e dao-lhe a liberdade criativa que ele teve , e mesmo após o Begins que nao foi um grande sucesso de bilheteiras , manter a aposta e continuar a dar a liberdade necessária ao Nolan foi uma excelente decisao que agora colhe os seus frutos.

Já agora , acompanho á varios anos e nao me lembro de ver um filme chegar a numero 1 do imdb após o seu lancamento. O top é uma palhacada , normalmente no lancamento dos filmes estes atingem valores altissimos (muitas vezes antes das estreias...) mas chegar a quase 30 mil votos com uma nota tao alta é fruto nao só de uma fanbase constituida por muitos fanboys mas também que o publico mais geral tem ficado muito agradado com o resultado final. Eu cá o espero 5a feira para o avaliar (nao me lembro da ultima vez que fui ver um filme no seu dia de estreia mas nao consigo esperar mais).

É mesmo pelo trabalho do actor. É claro que a morte dá uma certa aura mas eu sempre achei que o Heath ia surpreender as pessoas. E quando saiu o primeiro trailer, fiquei estupefacto. Não via ali o Heath Ledger, via o Joker. Nunca um actor, para mim, conseguiu mergulhar tanto num personagem ao ponto de se tornar irreconhecível. E nisso bate o Jack Nicholson por uma longa margem. Não tirando demérito ao Joker dele, mas crescendo a ver mais filmes dele, torna-se notório que aquilo acaba por ser Nicholson com maquilhagem (aliás, nota-se bem porque é que o homem exigiu que o papel fosse dele). Mas este captura mesmo a essência do Joker. E esse é o grande mérito do Nolan. Foi o único até agora que realmente se interessou por estes personagens, deu-lhes dimensão. Adoro os Batman´s do Burton, especialmente o 2º, mas quando os comparo com estes novos, fica notório que havia ali mais para ser explorado. E os personagens muito subdesenvolvidos, nunca ultrapassando a sua base iconográfica.

Here's the surprising studio breakdown: $67.8 million Friday, including those record-setting opening day midnight shows; $48 million Saturday (-29%), and projected $39.4 million Sunday (-18%). So if Sunday holds up, that FSS (Fri-Sat-Sun) non-holiday figure will be enough to snag the record from Spider-Man 3's $151.1 million. But it'll be close. The latest Batman installment did not set a record Saturday, leaving Spidey 3's best-ever $51.3M intact. That Friday to Saturday decline looks steep, but actually they mirror each other without the opening day midnight frenzy. Total domestic grosses for all the movies playing this weekend looks around $253M. That easily shatters the best-ever FSS non-holiday overall record of $218.4 million set on July 7-9, 2006 when Disney's Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest opened.
