Hung, How To Make It In America e Bored to Death canceladas, Enlightened renovada.
Those two Golden Globe nominations sure helped. HBO has just picked up the Mike White-Laura Dern comedy Enlightened for a second season, while canceling three other comedy series: Hung, Bored To Death and How To Make It In America. Enlightened drew critical praise but struggled mightily in the ratings on Mondays. However, ratings have never been the deciding factor in HBO’s renewal decisions as evident by the longevity of David Simon’s New Orleans drama Treme. The network was already leaning towards picking up Enightened for Season 2 when the dark comedy earned two Golden Globe nominations last week, for best comedy series and best actress in a comedy series, Dern. Hung and Bored To Death are ending their runs after three seasons, How To Make It In America after two. Of the four comedies that learned their fate today, Hung has been the highest-rated, and star Thomas Jane recently landed his second Golden Globe nomination for his role. But in the end that wasn’t enough.

This is quite the end-of-year house-cleaning on the comedy side at HBO, which had kept a slew of marginal performers around for a while. With Entourage done and Larry David yet to make up his mind whether to continue Curb Your Enthusiasm, Enlightened for now is HBO’s only returning comedy series next year along with Eastbound & Down, whose Season 3 kicks off in February. They will be joined by four new half-hour series: Armando Iannucci/Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Veep, Lena Dunham/Judd Apatow’s Girls, Ricky Gervais/Stephen Merchant’s Life’s Too Short, and Chris Lilley’s Angry Boys. HBO has two other comedies in the pipeline from auspices with strong track records at HBO — half-hour pilots 40, written by Entourage creator Doug Ellin and starring Ed Burns, and Viagra Diaries, penned by Sex And The City creator Darren Star and starring Goldie Hawn.

WINTER PREVIEW 2012: NEW TV SHOWS

Image
Angry Boys (debuts Jan. 1, 10:00 PM, HBO)
What Is It? Chris Lilley (Summer Heights High) shares his take on what it's like to be a 21st-century male, once again playing multiple oddball characters in a mockumentary.
Should You Watch? Yes. We're usually skeptical on actors who play multiple characters, but Summer Heights High was too amazing to doubt this new Lilley project. And something tells us he'll flip the masculinity question on its head.

Image
Work It (debuts Jan. 3, 8:30 PM, ABC)
What Is It? Feeling emasculated about the "mancession," two guys dudes dress as women to get jobs as pharmaceutical reps.
Should You Watch? Both GLAAD and the Human Rights Campaign say no, and we cannot agree more. We'd sooner suggest you watch reruns of cancelled fall shows How to be a Gentleman and Man Up!, if you have any further questions.

Image
Jane By Design (debuts Jan. 3, 9:00 PM, ABC Family)
What Is It? The Devil Wears Prada where the dorky assistant is actually a high school student.
Should You Watch? Maybe an episode, only to see how deliciously cheesy it is. Andie MacDowell provides a whole lot of '80s nostalgia.

Image
The Firm (debuts Jan. 8, 10:00 PM, NBC)
What Is It? The twisty legal drama that serves as a sequel to the John Grisham novel and movie of the same name.
Should You Watch? We're pretty iffy on it. We say an episode or two to see how it goes.

Image
House of Lies (debuts Jan. 8, 10:00 PM, Showtime)
What Is It? A dark comedy about a few ridiculous consultants, starring Don Cheadle, Kristen Bell, Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation's Jean-Ralphio) and Josh Lawson.
Should You Watch? This show is clearly after our hearts with this cast, and we're totally biting.

Image
Are You There, Chelsea? (debuts Jan. 11, 8:30 PM, NBC)
What Is It? The Laura Prepon-starring series created by Chelsea Handler (she co-stars as well), based on her best-selling book about a group of twenty-something crass ladies living in New Jersey.
Should You Watch? It really can't be worse than Whitney, right? We'll see. Our moms will most definitely love it.

Image
Rob (debuts Jan. 12, 8:30 PM, CBS)
What Is It? Rob Schneider stars as newly-eloped schmuck who unknowingly married into a tight-knit, excessively stereotyped Mexican-American family.
Should You Watch? We already said we wouldn't a year ago, and yet we still made the mistake of subjecting ourselves to the pilot. Please don't make the same slip-up we did.

Image
The Finder (debuts Jan. 12, 9:00 PM, Fox)
What Is It? The Bones spin-off everyone is the world was waiting on bated breath for! Geoff Stults is back as Walter Sherman, in this procedural about a man who has a knack for finding the "unfindable."
Should You Watch? You lost us at "Bones spin-off."

Image
Napoleon Dynamite (debuts Jan. 15, 8:30 PM, Fox)
What Is It? All of the voice actors are back to reprise their roles in the animated version of that movie that came out in 2004.
Should You Watch? It's impossibly worse than we had feared. Just say no, gosh!

Image
Alcatraz (debuts Jan. 16, 9:00 PM, Fox)
What Is It? Sarah Jones, Jorge Garcia and Sam Neill team together to investigate the reappearance of Alcatraz's most notorious prisoners, 50 years after they vanished..
Should You Watch? Yup! If the pilot is any indication, this has potential to be one of the season's best.

Image
Lost Girl (debuts Jan. 16, 10:00 PM, Syfy)
What Is It? A sexy supernatural drama featuring Anna Silk as a sultry humanoid who feeds off of sexual energy and fights erotic crime, or something. Did we mention it is very sex-infused?
Should You Watch? Yes, but um, only for critical purposes. Nothing else.

Image
Unsupervised (debuts Jan. 19, 10:30 PM, FX)
What Is It? Joining Archer, FX brings another animated comedy to the cable landscape with a series about best friends trying to survive teenage life without any parental guidance.
Should You Watch? It's by the writers of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia... but so was How to Be a Gentleman. Keep your expectations low, but check it out if you like your jokes in cartoon-form.

Image
On Freddie Roach (debuts Jan. 20, 9:30 PM, HBO)
What Is It? HBO + Peter Berg + cinéma-vérité + a world-famous boxing trainer + Parkinson's disease. Heavy enough for ya?
Should You Watch? Each episode is only a half hour, so save them all up to marathon through when you're ready to feel your absolutely saddest.

Image
Touch (special preview Jan. 25, 9:00 PM, series debut Mar. 19, 9:00 PM, Fox)
What Is It? An uplifting drama created by Tim Kring, the man who brought you Heroes, starring Kiefer Sutherland as a widower and single father who had no idea how to communicate with his 11-year-old son... because he's a child terrorist! Just kidding. Actually, the kid is a staggering genius with the ability to see things and patterns that no one else quite can. Danny Glover also stars.
Should You Watch? Yes, for sure. Kiefer is good and this thing is creepy.

Image
Luck (debuts Jan. 29, 10:00 PM, HBO)
What Is It? One of the most promising new dramas of 2012 thus far, Dustin Hoffman, Dennis Farina, John Ortiz, Kevin Dunn, Richard Kind, Jason Gedrick, Ritchie Coster, Ian Hart, Tom Payne, Kerry Condon, Gary Stevens and Nick Nolte (to name a few) make up the cast as a group of people who work around the business of horse racing.
Should You Watch? The seasons' only nine episodes, and if we were the betting types, we'd tell you to put your money on it.

Image
I Just Want My Pants Back (debuts Feb. 2, 11:00 PM, MTV)
What Is It? A teen comedy about a guy on a mission to find the one-night-stand who stole his pants and his heart while navigating the post-grad life in Brooklyn... so, hipsters
Should You Watch? Just in case you didn't catch the sneak-peak of the pilot after the VMAs a few months back, it's not great, but maybe worth a second chance, assuming you can stomach the culture.

Image
Smash (debuts Feb. 6, 10:00 PM, NBC)
What Is It? The behind-the-scenes drama of a team preparing an ambitious Broadway musical on the life of Marilyn Monroe.
Should You Watch? We're going to go with yes.

Image
The River (debuts Feb. 7, 9:00 PM, ABC)
What Is It? Wildlife expert and TV personality Emmet Cole (Bruce Greenwood) goes missing deep in the Amazon, and his friends, family and crew risk their lives trying to find him.
Should You Watch? The pilot is surprisingly good. Give it a chance!

Image
Life's Too Short (debuts Feb. 19, 10:30 PM, HBO)
What Is It? Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant working together yet again on a faux documentary starring little person Warwick Davis as a fictionalized version of himself -- a down-and-out guy desperately trying to get another 15 minutes of fame. Expect cameos from Gervais , Merchant, Johnny Depp, Sting and Steve Carell, to name a few.
Should You Watch? Maybe -- after all, at least it's full of new material, unlike The Ricky Gervais Show.

Image
GCB (debuts Mar. 4, 10:00 PM, ABC)
What Is It? Leslie Bibb plays a former queen bee(-atch) who returns to her Texan hometown with her kids after getting divorced. Revenge ensues, primarily in the form of Kristin Chenoweth.
Should You Watch? Yes, it's one of our top picks for 2012.

Image
Missing (debuts Mar. 15, 8:00 PM, ABC)
What Is It? Upon learning that her son has mysteriously disappeared while studying abroad, Becca Winstone (Ashley Judd) travels to Europe to track him down. Plus, a thousand twists and secrets.
Should You Watch? No, we're over the premise and Judd doesn't exactly sell it for us.

Image
Scandal (Timeslot TBD, ABC)
What Is It? A Shonda Rhimes joint about a "professional crisis manager" (Kerry Washington) and her team who specialize in "fixing the lives of other people" but "can't quite fix the ones closest at hand -- their own."
Should You Watch? It's cool that a woman of color is actually staring in this, but we have no reason to believe this won't be unwatchable.

Image
Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 (Timeslot TBD, ABC)
What Is It? Starring Krysten Ritter and Dreama Walker, this unfortunately named series is The Odd Couple with ladies, nudity and James Van Der Beek.
Should You Watch? Honestly, we'd probably tell you to watch anything with our darling Van Der Beek, but Apartment 23's pilot is legitimately hilarious. We've been excited to see more for months.

Image
The 2-2 (Timeslot TBD, CBS)
What Is It? A group of six diverse NYPD rookies (including Leelee Sobieski, Adam Goldberg and Judy Marte) patrol the gritty streets of upper Manhattan. Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal serve at the Executive Producers.
Should You Watch? It's worth checking out for Adam Goldberg, but don't get your hopes up.

Image
Awake (Timeslot TBD, NBC)
What Is It? A drama starring Jason Isaacs as a detective who finds he is leading an "arduous double life that defies reality" after a tragic family car accident, and manages to lead two lives in parallel universes.
Should You Watch? It could be crazy enough to work.

Image
Bent (Timeslot TBD, NBC)
What Is It? A romantic comedy about two people who are attracted to each other, despite the fact that they shouldn't be attracted to each other. Amanda Peet and David Walton star.
Should You Watch? Hmm, it sounds pretty lame, but Jeffrey Tambor is in it, so it might be worth giving it a shot.

Image
Best Friends Forever (Timeslot TBD, NBC)
What Is It? A single camera-comedy about adult female BFFs, one of whose husband has just left her. Sad and lonely, the divorcée moves in with her gal pal and her husband, and things get a little cramped.
Should You Watch? Fred Savage directed the pilot, and he's earned our attention after his hard work on Party Down.

Showtime Renews ‘Shameless’, ‘House Of Lies’ And ‘Californication’

After a strong start to the current season, Showtime has given an early renewal to its entire Sunday lineup of Shameless, House Of Lies and Californication. With the pickup of dark comedy House Of Lies, both of Showtime’s freshman series greenlighted by entertainment president David Nevins are going into a second season, along with drama hit Homeland. Shameless has been picked up for a third season, while Californication was renewed for a sixth. “These three shows are clearly resonating with audiences as evidenced by their steady growth on Sunday nights,” Nevins said. “We are extremely pleased with the creative work being done by the casts, producers and writers – and I so appreciate that each of these series has such a clear and distinctive voice.”

Showtime’s Sunday night lineup is posting double-digit year-over-year growth for its returning series and strong numbers for rookie House Of Lies. Shameless averages 4.75 million weekly viewers, up 30% vs. Season 1 to rank as Showtime’s No. 2-rated show behind only Dexter. House Of Lies is on track to be Showtime’s highest-rated comedy. Season 5 of Californication averages 2.96 million viewers across all platforms, up 10% from Season 4.

Based on the long-running UK series, Shameless was adapted by the original series’ creator Paul Abbott and John Wells, who are executive producing with Andrew Stearn. William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum star on the series from John Wells Prods and Warner Bros TV. Corporate America satire House Of Lies, starring Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell, is created and executive produced by Matthew Carnahan. Jessika Borsiczky, Stephen Hopkins and Don Cheadle also executive produce the Showtime-produced show. Veteran Californication, starring David Duchovny, is created and executive produced by Tom Kapinos and executive produced by Duchovny.

FX renews 'Sons of Anarchy' through season 6

FX has extended its deal for "Sons of Anarchy" through the show's sixth season, while creator Kurt Sutter has extended his own deal through what everyone assumes will be the show's seventh and final year.

Sutter actually announced the news himself last week, but the deal wasn't finalized until today.

FX had already ordered a fifth season of "Sons" (most likely to return in the fall, like usual) back in October, so this deal is only extending it for one more year. Sutter's three-year contract extension covers seasons 5, 6 and the presumed season 7, allowing him to both keep running the show while also developing new series for both cable and network television. The seventh season renewal is likely a formality, as "Sons" is the network's highest-rated series, Sutter has repeatedly said he has a seven-season plan, etc.

With a few exceptions ("It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," for instance), FX tends to renew its shows one season at a time, and the network takes its time closing those deals. This one apparently made sense for everyone to do it now.

Blue Mountain State cancelada
'Blue Mountain State' canceled: Season 4 drops out of Spike lineup

Bad news, Mountain Goats fans. Zap2it has learned exclusively that the plug has officially been pulled on "Blue Mountain State," the Lionsgate-produced college comedy, following its third season.

"Blue Mountain State," which aired its series finale in November, shot in Montreal and followed the often crude hijinks of a Pennsylvania college football team led by Thad (Alan Ritchson), Alex (Darin Brooks), and Sammy (Chris Romano). Denise Richards also starred as the wife of Coach Daniels (Ed Marinaro). The actors have now been released from their contracts.

The series aired for three 13-episode seasons on Spike, experiencing significant audience growth in its second season and dipping to about 900,000 viewers in Season 3. When Spike passed on renewing the series for Season 4, Lionsgate considered shopping it elsewhere, but recently notified cast and crew that it would not be revived.

While we'll miss the "American Pie" type humor that is rarely seen on television, we're looking forward to finding out where the promising cast goes next.

CBS renews 18 shows including 'Good Wife,' 'Person of Interest'

Big time renewal news! CBS just gave the bulk of its primetime slate an early pickup to return next season, including critically acclaimed drama The Good Wife and first-year comedy 2 Broke Girls. The renewals include four comedies, nine dramas, three reality series and two newsmagazines, some of which have been previously announced.
On the drama side, the network is bringing back NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, Criminal Minds, CSI, The Mentalist, Person of Interest, Blue Bloods and Hawaii Five-0 in addition to The Good Wife.
On the comedy side, CBS renewed Broke Girls and Mike & Molly. Previously, the network announced multi-year pickups for HIMYM and Big Bang Theory. The future of Monday night tent-pole comedy Two and a Half Men is under “preliminary discussions” with studio Warner Bros., CBS says.
Reality shows Amazing Race and Undercover Boss are also getting picked up, with Survivor having already been announced. The network is also bringing back 60 Minutes and 48 Hours Mystery.
Just because a show isn’t on the list doesn’t yet mean it’s cancelled. The fates of titles like CSI: NY, CSI: Miami, Unforgettable and A Gifted Man are still unknown.

Criminal Minds / Mentes criminosas.
