It's been a very quiet time for announcements, but finally, there's some very good news for fans of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: the Hitchhiker¹s movie finally has a green light. The Directing and Producing team of Hammer and Tongs (aka Garth Jennings and Nick Goldsmith), based in the UK are at the helm and long term supporters Spyglass Entertainment in LA are the Producers. By a strange twist of fate Nick and Garth are based just ten minutes walk from Douglas¹ house in Islington, London, so in some ways Hitchhiker¹s is coming home. Karey Kirkpatrick (Chicken Run, James and the Giant Peach) has written the new screenplay, which was very much based on the final draft that Douglas wrote. Karey has also had access to new material and ideas that are in the archive from Douglas's computers that was created following his death.
Garth and Nick are very creative and very much in tune with the wit and intelligence in the books and the radio series. It looks like there is a team assembled to do Douglas proud. The whole project has the blessing of Douglas's family and estate and we're all looking forward to a release sometime in 2005.
Douglas, when asked about the movie, always used to say, "Any decade nowŠ". It looks like this finally will be the one.

Não é bem assim. O que existe é uma série da BBC, baseada na série de rádio (que é o original - o livro é uma adaptação posterior dos scripts de rádio)
O Douglas Adams dedicou uma parte substancial da sua vida a tentar adaptar o "Hitchikers guide to the galaxy" ao ecran, numa adaptação digna desse nome, ao ponto de se mudar para a Califórnia, para estar mais perto dos estudios (daí o twist de ir encontrar o produtor e realizador a poucos km da sua casa inglesa).
Estava em negociações relativamente avançadas com a Disney quando morreu.

The original BBC radio adventures of Arthur Dent (an ape-descendant whose anger at the apparently inexplicable destruction of his home planet Earth, situated in an obscure corner of the outer spiral arm of the galaxy, is expressed in frequent irritation at friendly automatic doors and vending machines) and his travelling companions, Ford Prefect (an itinerant towel-carrying hitch-hiker originally from a small planet somewhere in the vicinity of Betelgeuse), Zaphod Beeblebrox (the notorious ex-Galactic President and patron of Eccentrica Galumbits, the triple-breasted whore of Eroticon Six) and Marvin the Paranoid Android (who's still suffering from that terrible pain in all the diodes down his left side) proved to be such a success for the BBC that its transition to TV was (almost) inevitable. In 1981 several key members of the radio cast made the move to the small screen. Simon Jones' bewildered Arthur Dent remains the central character, shambling around in his dressing gown (a fact easy to forget on radio); Mark Wing-Davey's Zaphod Beeblebrox is the same as his boastful radio persona, even if the second head utterly fails to convince. Unfortunately, newcomers David Dixon (as Ford Prefect) and the irritating Sandra Dickinson (as Trillian) are no match for their radio predecessors.
The problem here is not so much the low-budget look as the script itself, which is lovingly faithful to the radio series in a way that Douglas Adams' novels aren't. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was a lucid, satirical, occasionally profound, utterly unique comic invention on radio. As such, it has nothing to gain from TV. The script needs no visual elaboration--that's best left to the listener's own imagination. Only the animated renditions of the Guide itself enhance Peter Jones' wonderfully dry narration; otherwise--paradoxically, perhaps--by supplying images the concept is oddly diminished here.
On the DVD: A suitably eclectic not to say eccentric collection of extra features makes this a wholly satisfying two-disc set, neatly packaged in a fold-out slipcase. On the second disc there's an hour-long "making of" documentary from 1992 featuring contributions from the cast and crew, including Douglas Adams; and then there's even more in a 20-minute section entitled "Don't Panic!". A fascinating behind-the-scenes peek at filming as the clock runs out on studio time and a look at the recording of the original radio series complete the first part. Then navigate to the "Outer Planets" to find outtakes, a deleted scene, Zaphod's animatronic second head on Tomorrow's World and Peter Jones's witty and shambolic introduction to the first episode, plus more besides. The series itself is presented in standard 4:3 ratio and Dolby stereo. --Mark Walker

Estou para comprar isto ha seculos ! Tanto em audio-book, (a serie de radio toda) como em filme mesmo (a serie de tv toda), mas por qualquer motivo desconfio sempre disto. Tenho medo que não me vá rir muito não sei porquê.
É que comprei ha uns anos um clone disto chamado Red Dwarf em livro e em série de tv e não achei que valesse o dinheiro.
Mas continuo com imensa curiosidade em relaçao a isto.

a série tv e o rádio não sei. Os livros são absolutamente geniais, com uma elevada taxa de gargalhadas por cm2 de texto (estamos a falar do unico livro do mundo que tem um robot deprimido e existencialista - "os meus conhecimentos davam para salvar vários universos e mandam-me encontrar uma cura para uma doença? Não, mandam-me ir abrir uma porta!!!" - e uma bebida (o pangalaticgargleblaster) que é o equivalente a ter o cerebro esmigalhado por um lingote de ouro no qual se enfiou uma rodela de limão).
Atenção que se trata de uma trilogia em quatro volumes.

Tenho a "trilogia em quatro partes" toda num volume em inglês e três dos livros separados em português. Posso afirmar que a tradução é excelente, sem tirar a piada aos livros originais. É das 2 ou 3 coisas mais hilariantes que já li. É daquelas coisas que dá para rir sozinho á gargalhada...

Há cerca de uma mês atrás, estava em Belgrado em serviço e um taxista filósofo-pacifista-objector-de-consciência-refugiado de guerra falou-me de Douglas Adams e precisamente desta obra. Disse-me maravilhas do autor, entre citações de Nitzche e recordações da guerra civil.
Fiquei com imensa curiosidade, fiz umas buscas na Net, mas só encontrei edições em Inglês. Estou em pulgas para ver o filme, mas vou tentar encontrar primeiro o livro.

transmiti o cumprimento à minha mulher que ficou entre toda contente e comovida - foi uma das tradução mais dificeis e trabalhosas que teve e das que mais gozo lhe deu, mas como é "apenas um livro de fc" foi uma tradução a que ninguem ligou nenhuma!
Deverá ser dificil encontrar os livros. A Distri faliu e a minha mulher não tem ideia que a tradução tenha sido comprada por outra editora (mas é possivel, os tradutores não têm direitos autorais, pelo que ela não tem que se consultada/avisada). Talvez nos alfarrabistas.
Já agora - a minha mulher está disposta a vender (mas só por largos carrinhos de supermercados cheios de euros!) os 4 volumes da trilogia nas versões portuguesa e inglesa, com dedicatória e assinatura do Douglas Adams!

O endereço fala do Guia da Boleia para a Galáxia mas eu tinha ideia de que o título da tradução do 1º livro era Guia Galáctico do Pendura.
