John Carter of Mars director Andrew Stanton and screenwriter Mark Andrews came to Tarzana California to visit the Edgar Rice Burroughs archives at the ERB, Inc offices (and yes, Tarzana is in fact named after Tarzan). While there they talked with Burroughs estate reps about how excited they are for the project - which they're conceiving as a trilogy. Happy news, Pixar is looking well into the future with this property, and plan to revisit Barsoom (what the natives call Mars) again and again.

I'm psyched for this film as well - John Carter of Mars is my favorite of all the Edgar Rice Burroughs creations, and the strange mythology of Barsoom and its naked hot women and giant multi-armed green barbarian monsters has fueled my imagination for decades. The films would be live action with animated elements - most likely the Martian backgrounds and the beasts, but hopefully not the babes - and that could mean that 2012, an estimated year for the release of this movie, could be a historic one for Pixar. That might be the year when the animation studio releases two films that use or are live action; Brad Bird's mysterious live action project - rumored to be called 1906 and to be about the great San Francisco earthquake of that year - is tentatively penciled in for 2012.

It's nice to see that Pixar is so behind this film. At this point they have the muscle to make this a trilogy even if audiences don't eat up the first film - and God knows there's no guarantees when it comes to a film about a Civil War soldier who gets teleported to Mars. But if anyone can make John Carter a household name, it's Noah Wylie. And Pixar.

UPDATE: Thanks to Russ for reminding me that Pixar is going to break the live action barrier with Wall-E next year, which will have a live Fred Willard. It's a minor part of the film, but it will be the lead-in to what might be the studio's next phase.

New Look For Carter Of Mars?

Andrew Stanton, who is writing and directing John Carter of Mars, based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' books, told SCI FI Wire that he and co-writer Mark Andrews will be putting their own spin on the iconic story, and a Pixar manager added that the film will have a unique look as well.

"I'm going to do what I remember more than what they exactly do" in the books, Stanton said cryptically in a group interview at the Emeryville, Calif., headquarters of Pixar on Sept. 25.

Stanton (WALL*E) added that he is currently deep in writing with partner Andrews, a storyboard artist at Pixar, on the script for Carter. "John Carter of Mars is what I'm writing right now with Mark Andrews," Stanton said. "Writing, it's all about writing this year."

Jim Morris, general manager at Pixar Animation, promised that the movie will not look like previous attempts to adapt the franchise for the screen. "Everything that's been out there has been an attempt to kind of capture this Deco-esque [Frank] Frazetta vision of John Carter, which I think feels old and stale," he said. "And where Stanton is going--from what we've seen so far--is very different than that. And I think that the people who really love the essence of the books will really dig it, but so will audiences in general."

Asked if the film would be in 3-D, Morris added, "I hope not!"

The film is based on the early 20th-century Barsoom series of books by Burroughs, the California author of the Tarzan series. It centers on a Civil War veteran who finds himself transported to the Red Planet and caught up in various battles and intrigues involving giant green creatures and an alluring princess.

It's been reported that Carter may incorporate live-action elements amid animation. Stanton's WALL*E was the first Pixar production to incorporate live action. Morris declined to discuss the matter.

"John Carter is in its very early stages and there is much to figure out about that so we'd be premature," Morris said. "We are looking at a variety of different approaches and techniques for that ... We're kind of a bit early in the development of that."

Morris added: "I'm sure I speak for all of the science fiction geeks, fans and aficionados when I say it's finally time to see that movie. And I, for one, am delighted that Andrew Stanton is the guy that's making the movie, because he's a story-driven guy." --Patrick Lee, News Editor

'John Carter of Mars' nets three more actors

Thomas Haden Church, James Purefoy and Mark Strong have joined the cast of joined “John Carter of Mars,” Disney’s adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs book series that Andrew Stanton is directing.

Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins topline the production, which centers on a Civil War veteran (Kitsch) who finds himself mysteriously transported to Mars, where he becomes embroiled with the planet’s warring people.

Church plays Tal Hajus, an ambitious and vicious Thark warrior who is biding his time to be a ruler.

Purefoy plays Kantos Kan, the captain of the Xavarian, the kingdom of Helium’s grand warship. Strong is Matai Shang, the ruler of the Thems with godlike status.

Also in the movie are Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, Dominic West, and Polly Walker.

Stanton wrote the screenplay with Mark Andrews. Jim Morris and Colin Wilson are producing “Mars,” which is eyeing a start early next year. Brigham Taylor is overseeing for the studio.

Church, repped by WME, has “Easy A” from Screen Gems in the can while Purefoy, repped by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners, recently starred in TV’s “The Philanthropist.” ICM-repped Strong will next be seen as the villain in “Sherlock Holmes.”

O titulo entretanto passou apenas para John Carter (parece que agora é a nova moda dos estudios diminuírem os titulos porque os coitadinho dos espectadores podem ficar confundidos com tantas palavras....)

Como teaser não está mau mas o John Carter de Burroughs é mais proactivo e com mais personalidade, assim o esboçou Burroughs, as adaptações para Comics seguem essa linha.

De qualquer forma acho a Dejah Thoris muito vestida para o papel mas pois claro, isto é um filme da Disney...

Digo o mesmo. Nada me entusiasma neste projecto. Um sem número de lugares comuns sem pingo de originalidade.

Isso é porque este foi o percursor de todos os outros. Star Wars, Flash Gordon, Avatar, etc, nunca teriam existido se não fosse a saga de Barsoom escrita por Edgar Rice Burroughs à coisa de 100 anos. Esta foi a história que inventou praticamente todos esses clichés. É um pouco como desancar O Senhor dos Anéis por causa de todos os clichés da fantasia épica quando tudo começou a partir dali.

O único problema é ter chegado tarde à festa depois de todos os outros terem comido do seu prato.

Não duvido que assim seja. Mas soa tudo tão ridículo e sem sentido de aventura... A mim parece-me tudo muito plástico. Sem querer entrar em comparações - porque não fazem grande sentido - o Hunger Games parece-me bem mais conseguido.
