Janus Films: Essential Art House Vol I (Criterion)

Post by Shivers »

Dear Criterion viewers,

This week, we’re excited to announce the launch of a new line: Essential Art House. Two years ago, when Janus Films celebrated its fiftieth anniversary, we marked the occasion with the beautiful fifty-disc box set and book Essential Art House: 50 Years of Janus Films, full of classics that provided so many moviegoers with their introduction to world cinema.

Now, titles from the box set (and others that just couldn’t fit) will be released individually as part of the Essential Art House line, affordable, streamlined, movie-only DVD editions with gorgeous transfers and liner notes. We hope to encourage those not familiar with these great films to try them out at prices lower than those of our full-blown special editions. We’ll present new titles four times a year; for Criterion collectors, most of these films will be well-known, but it’s a great way to introduce a friend to classic cinema.

Each Essential Art House volume will contain six movies, which will be available individually for $19.95 or in a box set for $99.95 (six for the price of five). Our first releases are: Ingmar Bergman’s Wild Strawberries, Peter Brook’s Lord of the Flies, Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast, Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon, Roman Polanski’s Knife in the Water, and Jean Renoir’s Grand Illusion.
